C. Grimaldis Gallery, the longest continually operating gallery in Baltimore, opened in 1977 with a focus on local and regional artists, encouraging a spirit of exploration and experimentation. Within just a few years, owner Constantine Grimaldis began to exhibit important international artists, beginning with Grace Hartigan, Elaine de Kooning, Alice Neel, Anne Truitt, and Sir Anthony Caro. Continually developing its distinct curatorial viewpoint, the gallery maintained its commitment to emerging and mid-career artists while simultaneously developing relationships with many of the major names of the day including John Baldessari, Willem de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Serra, Joel Shapiro and John Waters. Focusing on a selective roster, the gallery promoted younger artists like Chul Hyun Ahn, Beverly McIver, Jae Ko, and John Ruppert, exhibiting their work along with more well-known artists in both the regular gallery program and at international art fairs in the US and Europe.
Specializing in both modern and contemporary work in all media, the gallery has regularly produced scholarly catalogues for both solo exhibitions and important group shows, and has demonstrated a long commitment to hosting lectures and discussions about art and artists. The gallery represents the estate of Grace Hartigan and Eugene Leake among others.
